Yoga for Paddling Workshops with Anna Levesque

In the US we spend over 100 billion dollars annually treating low back pain when most, if not all, low back pain is avoidable. When we become aware of our body alignment and stretch the muscles we overuse while strengthening the muscles we underuse, we can bring our bodies back to balance reducing pain, discomfort and the risk of injury from paddling. In this clinic Anna will teach the principles of optimal body alignment, go over the cause of back pain and discomfort as well as shoulder injuries caused from

paddling. She’ll teach you poses and exercises to help you take control of how your body feels and performs on and off the water. The morning session will be a dry-land session at the campground learning about the anatomy of paddling and how that affects the alignment of the body. Anna will walk you through yoga poses and exercises that help to counteract the movements of paddling and bring your body back into alignment. You’ll walk away from the session feeling freer in your body and equipped with knowledge that can help keep you paddling pain-free for years to come.

In the afternoon, after a lunch break, we’ll move to the water and paddle at the Ledges Rapid on the French Broad, exploring how we can maintain this body alignment and awareness on the water. You’ll paddle away from the afternoon session with strategies for better posture in your boat and better performance on the water, all while reducing the risk of injury.

This clinic is a must for anybody who sits a lot, whether in your kayak, at a desk or in your car, or all three. For anyone who experiences low back discomfort or pain and anyone who has injuries from paddling. Balance your body so that you can paddle for many, many more years to come and enjoy the sport that you love!

At the end of the workshop you’ll have an in-depth knowledge of paddling anatomy, how you can prevent common paddling injuries, reduce pain and be familiar with yoga poses that you can practice athome. Stress management techniques that you can use on and off the water will also be part of the workshop.  This workshop is open to both men and women.  All levels – no previous yoga experience necessary. Please come as you are!!

There are 2 day options and 1 day options available for this workshop. The difference is that the 1-day option will be condensed and less thorough, but still valuable for those who have less time available or who want to check out what Yoga for Paddling is all about without a 2-day time commitment.

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

All levels Yoga for Paddling class with a focus on the hips, low back and hamstrings.

9:00 a.m. – Noon 

Deeper exploration of alignment principles that can help to reduce injury and pain for hips, low back and hamstrings.

Noon – 1:30 p.m. lunch break

1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.  Head to the French Broad River through Asheville to set shuttle and do some paddling (Class II) and integrating the alignment principles and posture we learned in the classroom. This section is friendly for all crafts (kayak, canoe, SUP AND all levels). The purpose of the paddle is not necessarily to work on paddling skill (but we will do some of that), but to bring more awareness to the alignment of our bodies when we paddle with the goal of reducing the risk of injury and finding comfort in our posture and paddling positions. The easy and friendly nature of this particular section of river is very conducive to building awareness.

All levels Yoga for Paddling class with a focus on the chest, shoulders and side-body.

9:00 a.m. – Noon

Deeper exploration of alignment principles that can help to reduce injury and pain in the chest, shoulders and side-body.

Noon – 1:30 p.m. Lunch break

1:30 p.m. Head back to the French Broad River through Asheville to do more paddling and integrating!

4:30 p.m. Wrap-up
