5 Ways to Empower Your Mornings

5 Ways to Empower Your Mornings

What if I told you that drinking lemon water in the morning could give you a whole new outlook on life? Would you believe me?

Perhaps not, so instead I’m sharing the real life experience of one of my coaching clients. She recently wrote this in a group email thread in my Winter Wellness Circle:

“Just after Christmas I was feeling low and on one particular morning I specifically noticed how I actually felt uplifted by drinking my lemon water.

It actually caught my attention and surprised me and I specifically recognized how having a morning routine was helping my morning.

I think maybe now that I’ve been doing a morning routine for a while, I associate it with good/positive.

It was really nice to feel my morning routine help take my day from starting out in a dark place to a place where I could more easily be open to the good things I had in store that day.”

Another client and member of the group also shared how her morning routine helped her recover from an inner struggle:

“I kept my core morning routines, regardless of my inner battle.

Having those routines helped me to more easily realign myself and create a safe, caring space.”

What you’re hearing from both women, is the power of a consistent morning routine made up of small acts of self-care. These small acts are easy to overlook as inconsequential. BUT, when they’re performed consistently over time, they reap great benefits, just like a savings account with compounding interest.

According to Ayurveda, a consistent morning routine is key to health, immunity and wellbeing. That’s why I introduce it in every program I run, even in seemingly unrelated programs like my Whitewater Master Class.

It’s important to start small, with a routine that is actually doable for you.

Here is a simple 5-step morning routine to uplift and transform your life in 2021
1. Wake up between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.

This is a good time to wake up and enjoy the peaceful qualities of early morning. Waking up early, according to Ayurveda will help you feel more energized than sleeping late. Going to bed by 10 p.m. helps set you up for success, and get 7 – 8 hours of sleep.

2. Express gratitude for your life, and having the opportunity to wake up to another day.

This quick yet powerful gratitude can lift your spirits and help you remember that your life is a gift, and that you are a gift to this world.

3. Drink warm lemon water BEFORE coffee and food

Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning has many benefits. It stimulates digestion and elimination, supports weight loss, helps to flush your kidneys, and hydrates you.

Here’s how to prepare your lemon water:

  • Put water on to boil.
  • Cut a lemon wedge from a fresh lemon (organic is preferred).
  •  Squeeze the juice from the wedge into your favorite mug and drop in the wedge itself.
  • Pour the water that has just boiled into your mug.
  • Let cool until it’s a good temp to drink and drink up! Note: You don’t want to meander with your lemon water, you want to drink it all at once.
4. Mindfulness practice

This is time for you to do something that ignites your spark and supports your wellbeing in mind and body. Here are some examples of practices you could choose from:

  • Lighting a candle in honor of your spark
  • Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Journaling,
  • A mindful walk outside (any activity you love)
  • Yoga
  • Breathwork
  • Inspirational reading.
5. Eat Breakfast no later than 9 a.m.

All of the above activities are ideally done before you eat your breakfast. You will have sparked your gratitude, your joy and your digestion. Your body will be ready to eat a small, nourishing breakfast to move you into the next phase of the day.

As my clients both experienced and shared, developing a consistent morning routine can empower you with the spark to transform your mindset, lift your spirits and live each day to its fullest.
