“If you charge that much I won’t work with you anymore.”
Was she really going to fire me? That’s bold, I thought.
“Because you’re worth way more than that.”
I could sense her frustration with me and I knew this was a crux moment. Just like the determining moments on the river, the trail or the mountain, the course of action I chose would determine what kind of person I would become.
Would I let fear rule the day or would I choose courage?
Stay in my comfort zone or take a risk?
These are questions I challenge my own students and clients with all the time. I’ve coached many women through challenges on and off the water, and it felt unsettling to have the tables turned on me.
For a moment. Then I cracked a smile because I knew this was exactly the kind of coach I signed up for. Someone who saw my potential so clearly and believed in it so much that she was willing to walk away if I didn’t step up.
She gave me an ultimatum to push me to make a choice now. As the famous Yoda quote goes: “Do or do not. There is no try.”
It scared the crap out of me. My stomach was in knots, AND I chose to change the story and place greater value on my work, my years of experience, and most importantly, the exceptional results I’m passionate about helping my clients achieve.
A few days later I realized on the river that valuing myself in terms of pricing is the same as trusting my skills on difficult rapids.
Both feel risky, and both require aligning self-talk, thoughts and stories with greater confidence.
It’s not easy, but getting different results first requires telling different stories about ourselves or the situation, and taking different actions.
Is it time to change your story, and step (or hire a coach to help push you) out of your comfort zone? I believe in you. If I can do it so can you!
