This is what I was afraid of. I’d put myself out there just to look stupid. It. Was. Terrifying.
What makes you feel vulnerable?
You know, that sinking feeling of resistance in your gut, followed by a drawing in and shutting down?
At least that’s the feeling I got when my business coach asked me to do vlogs. When I responded that I had been thinking about doing then for awhile, she said, OK then do one today.
Even though I was experiencing resistance throughout my whole being, I knew that I had to take on the challenge.
Within a half hour I was on my back porch filming. As I looked at myself on my phone screen so many self-criticisms went through my mind. My hair, my wrinkles, the camera angle and so on…
I didn’t have a script prepared, I just knew that I wanted to talk about vulnerability and empower others to find the courage to take on challenges as well.
Even though I was taking on the challenge I was still trying to control and resist. My first take was the best, and most authentic, but it scared me because it wasn’t ‘perfect.’
So… 6 takes later I finally come to terms with my imperfection and remind myself that my authenticity is powerful. I take a deep breath, find my courage and post.
And then….
Crickets.
Nothing.
Terrifying.
And then… one beautiful, powerful, authentic share in the comments. And then another. I was floored by the vulnerability and courage being shared.
More kept coming in until there were over a dozen powerful and inspiring shares. Folks were encouraging and acknowledging each other for their courage.
The Takeaway?
Had I kept myself small and stayed in my comfort zone I would have had 0 impact on my community. That’s not what I’m committed to.
So I now turn the challenge to you.
What makes you feel vulnerable and what is one courageous action you can take in spite of that fear? How will you courageously impact your community today?
Please share in the comments!
