Ladies Southeast Paddling Series – Pigeon

Anna's Group PhotoSaturday on the Pigeon River 19 women gathered in the sunshine to celebrate Shannon’s memory. With paddle games, surf stops, stern squirts and splashes, we whisked around the water way. Dropping down eddy by eddy, surf stop by surf stop, everyone had a buddy to cheer and congratulate as after each surf, squirt, ender or roll, ladies came up smiling.

A huge Thank you to Dave Crawford and Rapid Expeditions for donating time to run our shuttle on a busy weekend morning! Arriving back at our cars, we found a pocket of shade for our raffle. Ladies walked away with some sweet swag this week including a Patagonia handbag and hat, Dagger shirt, Kokatat top, Werner hats and a $150 Girls at Play gift certificate!

Everyone also was able to purchase tickets for the big end of the season raffle. There are some serious prizes: a Dagger kayak of choice, Werner paddle, Kokatat Drysuit, a trip to Ecuador with Anna Levesque and Juliet Kastorff, a Jennifer Whitlock Glasswork piece, a Becca Day Stain-glass piece and more! Winners will be drawn and prizes claimed at the last event of the series on October 1st with a finale celebration at Endless River Adventures.

On Saturday raffle tickets purchased raised over $400 for the Shannon Christy Memorial Fund!! Thank you ladies! We appreciate all of your contributions as we get closer and closer to our goal of raising $10,000 for the Fund this year! This amount will allow the fund to gain longevity via the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. These funds will be used to support women’s empowerment charities throughout the nation. We greatly appreciate you coming out to share your time, energy and community to help make this happen in memory of Shannon.

Another way to help support the Shannon Christy Memorial fund is through the purchase of the 2016 Girls At Play T-shirt. These are available sizes S-XL at all of the Ladies Southeast Paddling series events, but if you can’t make it, you can also order one online off our webstore. $5 from each t-shirt sale goes directly to the Shannon Christy Memorial Fund.

If you’d like to make a tax deductible contribution through mail or online, please send checks made out to the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina with ‘Shannon Christy Memorial Fund’ written in the memo to:
4 Vanderbilt Park Drive, Suite 300
Asheville, NC 28803

You can also Donate online – Please indicate Shannon Christy Memorial Fund Under “OR Is your gift for a fund not listed above?”

Hard moves in easy water for a powerful mindset

You may think you know what practicing hard moves in easy water means, and I bet you don’t think of it as paddling the Narrows of the Green (a Class IV-V section). Earlier this month I paddled into the Narrows of the Green to watch Green Race. For those of you unfamiliar with the race,

Boundaries for a powerful mindset

The rapids you love exist because of the boundaries of the river banks. Those boundaries create a container in which the water flows powerfully. If you want a powerful mindset, you want to create your own river banks that empower you to feel confident, live and paddle at your best. What happens when you don’t
