Mexico Photos and Wrap-up!

Mexico has gotten a lot of bad press lately so we’d like to give you some good news about our favorite country south of the border.  Our whitewater kayaking trips in Jalcomulco, Veracruz went off without a hitch this winter!  We experienced the same friendliness, slow-paced lifestyle, delicious fresh food, sunshine and amazing rivers as always.

We started off with a custom whitewater kayaking co-ed trip in January followed by two womens intermediate trips and one novice womens trip.  Many people tell us that our trips offer so much more than kayaking and we like it that way.  Besides the amazing kayaking we experienced a lot of laughter, music, dancing and fun!  Morning yoga helped keep everyone’s bodies stretched, strengthened and balanced for the full week of paddling.  We had a blast and are grateful to those of you who joined us this year!  Here are a few positive headlines about Mexico from the women who joined us:

“It was like a river of dreams!! So much fun!”  — Melanie Rausch, Boston, MA

“I’m still dreaming of my trip this past January! It was the best! Thanks for everything.” — Heather Woodward, Crested Butte, CO

“Thank you for one of the best weeks of my life 🙂 I learned so much from both of you and cannot wait to get back in the water!!”  — Donna Morgan, PA

“I’m still basking in the afterglow of a great trip…thanks again to Anna and Mary Frances and all the wonderful women and interns who participated.”  — Laura Heron, Redding, CA

On a personal note I was able to assist a river monitoring group under Global Water Watch, taught complimentary yoga classes in Spanish to local women and spent an afternoon picking coffee with friends who were harvesting their crop.  We also made a special trip to the Oro River in southern Veracruz — one of the most pristine and coolest rivers I’ve ever run!  It’s a solid class IV river in the jungle and  has a 40ft waterfall followed by a 30 ft waterfall that are both good to go.  I hadn’t run waterfalls that tall in many years and the adrenaline rush was awesome — or chingon as my friend Aldo would say.

Mary Frances go to  celebrate her birthday a la Mexicana with a traditional tres leches cake, mordida, pinata and salsa night!

We’re already looking forward to our 2012 season and going back to all of the amazing stuff Mexico has to offer!  Here is a highlight reel from the many photos taken during our trips and adventures.  Enjoy!

Scary stories and how to face them

Creek Week is coming up next week, and inevitably the question of scary river stories and how to process them will be a topic of conversation. I remember being on the banks of the White Nile River in Uganda scouting the Class V rapid called Itanda. At the time there hadn’t yet been a successful

How to paddle with fewer strokes

Do you feel like you paddle hard and still miss lines on the river? The problem may be that you’re paddling too much. Paddling is sometimes overemphasized in instruction causing loss of control and unnecessary energy expenditure. A few years ago I posted this video of me running one of my favorite rapids: Both my

How to uplevel your boof

Creek Week is almost here, and I’m excited to work with the group to uplevel their boof, one of my favorite whitewater kayaking skills. Not only is boofing fun, but it’s also a key technique that allows you to work with rocks instead of being afraid of them. Cultivating a working relationship with rocks goes
