Want to achieve big goals in your life?
If you give up as soon as it feels uncomfortable, or like you’re ‘failing’ then you’ll never see those big results you want to achieve.
The other day I paddled a playboat on a big wave for the first time in years. It had been 4 years since I paddled freestyle, and over 10 years since I paddled a big, bouncy wave.
I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to do any of my old tricks from the height of competitive freestyle kayak career 20 years ago. The idea of getting a big air blunt (an aerial kayak trick) was super enticing and I wanted to challenge myself!
When I first got to the wave it looked super fast and scary. I had to start with baby steps like ferrying out and past the wave. There were several passes where I missed the wave completely. Others where I flipped immediately or got face surfed. I almost swam once because I had to remember how to roll a playboat in bigger, swirly current!
It took a lot of commitment and determination to keep peeling out and going for the wave. I could have easily given up, and told myself that I was too old and out of practice etc…
But, I know that big results come from small consistent action over time. So, I kept at it through the crashes and the feelings of being out of control.
Then, finally, it all lined up. My timing was on and I got the bounce I needed to get that big lefty air blunt! Those few seconds were super exhilarating and so worth the journey!
You can’t have the glory moments without the crashes.
In this video I show you my big move… and then a few examples of what my other rides looked like.
So… keep going for your big dreams and when you feel like you’re ‘failing,’ remember that it takes a lot of face surfs before and alongside those big, fun moves!
